Tuesday's Training: Revisiting the Headphone Debate

First off, less than a month to the big day! Marathon, watch out, here I come! My mind is preoccupied with race day thoughts. What to wear, to tape or not to tape, what to eat, coffee or no coffee, which socks, blah, blah, blah. And of course, there's the question of headphones or no?

Now that I have my nifty and sleek ipod shuffle, I've been debating running BayState with headphones. Oh side note, Nick even had it engraved. It says something about me being "super speedy." Isn't he just the sweetest? Anyway, back to the topic at hand...racing with headphones. Hmmm, this topic has preoccupied my mind much longer than it should have. For me, I've just never raced with headphones, and the whole concept feels foreign to me. The last few months I've been running with music here and there (probably 30% of the time), but I haven't relied on it for my training in general. I've only run one long run with music, and it was nice to have. I've also run a number of my tempo runs with headphones. Honestly though, I find the music distracting when I'm running a tough tempo run, and most of the time I don't even listen to the music. When I'm trying to focus the music just irritates me. Therefore, I've decided to forgo headphones for the marathon. Of course, I might change my mind next week, but I'm fairly, sort of , pretty sure that I won't be running with headphones.

How about you? Are you running any races this fall? Have you ever been preoccupied with the headphone debate?

Markie got me an i pod for Christmas and he even put his famous music collection on it for me, but when I do a hard all out run, I usually turn it off. It breaks my concentration. I will not be wearing it during the marathon. I save the music for my fun runs. The runs that I have no goals for. P.S. I was on the bike trail in Chelmsford this morning and a biker almost ran me down. I tried to make a quick move to one side to avoid him and hurt my tendon again. I ended up running the rest of the distance limping. Hope the guy didn't do me in for race day! Mom

I think I am going to use my I-pod for the marathon. I raced with it during my last 1/2 and it worked. I had a special playlist preped, and it helped a lot. Probably will try to chat the first 1/2 of the race, and use the I-pod for the last 1/2. Looking forward to our run on Saturday.

I had my ipod clipped on for my marathon, but I never used it. the shuffle is so small that you can clip it on and tuck in the head phones. I did use music for the trail half I ran a couple of weeks ago. I have another half coming up on Oct. 4th and I probably will bring it. I always drink coffee. Always. I seriously can not function in life without my morning cup of coffee. I always eat half a PB and J before any race (well, for a half or more) and that does me pretty well. good luck! I can't wait to hear how you will do. I am confident you will qualify for Boston this year!

when i run on the road, i ALWAYS use my .mp3 player. (not an iPOD. sensa.) on trails, however, it is only about 50% of the time. never on trail races. since the trails are usually narrow, i need to hear people passing me. the monotany of the road necessitates a distraction.
good posts!
