Ode to Nick's Backpack

Nick has had his L.L. Bean backpack since 1987! A gift from Uncle Paul and Auntie Pam. For 22 years, his backpack has accompanied him almost everywhere. Every exam he ever took in high school and college, there was his black L.L. Bean backpack. Every text book he has ever owned has resided, at one time or another, in the protective confines of that awesome backpack. Once an engineer, there was no need to purchase anything else, that black backpack was tough enough to get the job done. And it did quite well.

Nick’s L.L. Bean backpack has a rich history. It’s seen the top of Mt. Washington more than once. It has traveled to interesting places such as Japan, Hawaii, Bermuda, Disney, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, and to slightly less interesting places such as Georgia, Alabama, Texas, and Nebraska. It has been tossed about, seen the inside of numerous x-ray machines, and always fit under the seat on an airplane. But alas, the sun is setting on the amazing L.L. Bean backpack. Last Thursday the zipper broke.

Incredible really. I’ve tried to think of something I own and use daily that I’ve had for a long time. And there’s nothing! I’m fond of my running shoes, and lucky if they last six months. I’ve been through several backpacks in my day. Obviously, I hope that my wedding band lasts a great deal longer than 22 years (which is 8,035 days in case you were wondering), but it’s not like I expect much from it. No moving parts and all. Although at this point Nick might point out that we also have platinum bands (which are more durable than gold or silver) mostly because of my nature. Yup, it’s true. I like to push things to the limit and see what happens. It makes things interesting. And it's one of the reasons why Nick loves me...right honey? But I digress, this is an ode to Nick’s backpack, and last Thursday the zipper broke. Friday after work, Nick picked out another L.L. Bean backpack. Now what should we do with broken one?

Do you have anything you use often that has lasted quite some time? Are you in awe of the quality L.L. Bean backpack? Do you think I'm ridiculously silly? Don’t be shy now! We’d love to hear from you!

My husband has a talent for holding on to things for way longer than I do. I have an old family ring which carries a lot of history (my mom got it from my grandmother on her highschool graduation day) and I've managed to hold on to it since my HS graduation - 15 years ago. That's about it, though! Ana-Maria

Ana-Maria: Hey you know, now that I think of it, I have my high school ring too. Although, the only time I ever actually wore it was in high school. Thanks for the comment!

It does seem like a shame to just throw it out after all of that history. Maybe you should have a little ceremony for it. :o)

Kristin: Hmm, a ceremony, that could be interesting. I wonder what such a ceremony should consist of? Singing, speeches, food?

Ooh, ooh, I know. Maybe we should bronze it! Okay, now I'm just
getting silly. ;)

Katie, Maybe you don't have any of your old things, but I have a case full of them in Maine. That's what I would do with the back pack. Buy an enclosed case and keep it in there for good keeping. You'll find that it will be even harder to get rid of anything that is Kaylee's...
