Tuesday's Training Update: Half Marathon May 24

In a little less than two weeks, I'll be running Boston's Run To Remember, a half marathon that according to McMillan's pace calculator I should be able to finish somewhere between 1:35:32 and 1:40:51 (based on my last few races). I'm thinking 1:35 might be a stretch, I'll be shooting for 1:37, which was my goal regardless of the calculator output. It was just nice to confirm that my goal might be realistic.

In trying to keep my IT band in check, I only ran three days last week. I did manage a good 14.5 miler at 9:10 pace, which was nice and comfy. And yes, I was pushing the tiny tyke, who opted to nap for a majority of the time. The IT band seems to be doing okay, but it often feels tight when I'm running. I'm starting to wonder if perhaps all the miles with the running stroller are exacerbating the issue, which would be a shame because Kaylee loves the running stroller. I partly want to blame the stroller because I've been running approximately 17 years now and haven't ever had IT band issues, which makes me think the stroller must change my gate. Maybe I'll need to conduct a few running experiments. I'll keep you posted.

The next week and a half I'll be tapering a bit in preparation for the half marathon. I'm both excited and nervous! In other news, my mom will also be running a half on May 24, but in Hyannis. I wish we were running the same race! It's so much nicer going to a race with a fellow runner! Oh, and I may not have mentioned it...she's all registered for the BayState Marathon!

Here's where I share last week's training:
Monday: 5.75 mile run at 9:13 pace
Tuesday: 5K row 6:34 pace
Wednesday: 5K row 6:31 pace
Thursday: 14.5 mile run 9:10 pace
Friday: 3 X 1600 meter row 6:33 pace + 40 minute bike
Saturday: 7.25 mile run at 9:26 pace
Sunday: Off

First of all, I am still amazed at your pace. I don't think I could run that fast without a stroller!

As for the IT band issue-- I had heard that people who always run on the same side of the road can have problems with the IT band because they are always on a slight/subtle slope. Could it be that when pushing the jogger you are always on one side of the road?

I betting on 1:36 for you.

Michelle: Yeah, those pesky banked roads might be part of my problem. The last week or so I've started trying to switch sides. I wonder how long it will take for me to notice a difference?

Mom: 1:36! You have high expectations! Let's see...I'm betting on 1:57:45 for you. ;)

Yeah, I see what you're saying, but you're an old timer and could really do it. I hear the average newbie time is 2:15.

Mom: Sure if you had a bad day you might run 2:15, but I think you can realistically break 2:00. :)

We'll see, remember you won't be there dragging me over the finish line this time...

Pushing my jogging stroller completely changes my gait; I am unable to run with it anymore! (That plus with my kids in it, it is pushing 100lbs...) Also I heard the same thing about running on one side of the road, there is a drainage grade (even if subtle) on all roads.

Oh and I am definitely doing the Denver Marathon in October...and am still trying to convince myself that I can do an earlier one say in August....big stretch would be SFM on July 26 (no pressure on time for first one, so hills can come at me with all they got!) mostly cause I want to go to San Francisco and that would be a good excuse. :-)

M2Marathon: Going to San Fransisco would be really cool! Someday I might convince my husband that we should take a vacation there right around the time of the marathon!
